B-Sides: Track TenA Stage Play by KevinScene Ten of Eleven. "A twenty-seven year old despondent writer and a sixteen year old musician form a profound attachment to each other through their love of David Bowie."
TRACK TEN [The lights go up on Mayya
standing center stage. Josh walks in from the stage right door.] JOSH Hey, how are you holding up? MAYYA I’m in and out. JOSH Do you need anything, something to drink or
something? MAYYA I’m fine, thank you. JOSH If there’s anything you need at all, just let
me know. MAYYA Did you grow up here? JOSH Yes, I did. This was my old room actually.
After I left my parents turned it into a…another living room, I guess, I don’t
really know what they’re trying to pull off here. MAYYA It’s nice. I wish I had grown up in the city. JOSH It’s not really all that special. You would
think it would be wonderful, but…I don’t know, seeing the city for the first
time, that’s something you never forget. Growing up here, you get used to it
and it takes a while to realize how special it actually is. MAYYA That makes sense. JOSH Clive told me you play guitar. MAYYA I do. JOSH That’s awesome. My brother has a guitar that
my parents got for him one year for his birthday, he never learned to play but
I’m sure it’s around here somewhere. In case you get bored or…need to take your
mind off of things. MAYYA That’s very kind of you. [Pause] JOSH What kind of music do you like? MAYYA Bowie, The Doors, Creedence, Pink Floyd,
Zeppelin. JOSH Fan of the classics, I see. MAYYA What about you? JOSH I don’t know. I listen to whole bunch of
s**t. Radiohead, The Pixies, Arcade Fire. You like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs? MAYYA I love them. JOSH They’re awesome, right? MAYYA I always dreamed about being Karen O one day.
JOSH Me too. [Mayya smiles] MAYYA I don’t really know your brother that well,
to be honest. JOSH Yeah? He’s a good kid. At least, I think he
is, I’d like to pretend that he is but I honeslty don’t see him that often… [Clive walks in through the
stage right door. Mayya immediately starts crying, runs up to him and holds
him.] CLIVE It’s okay. MAYYA Clive, I’m so sorry for…for… CLIVE You have nothing to be sorry for, okay?
Everything’s gonna be okay. JOSH I’ll leave you two alone. CLIVE Thank you, Josh. [Josh nods and leaves the room.] MAYYA I finally got to meet your friends. One of
them, at least. CLIVE He’s really the only one I’ve got. MAYYA And me. CLIVE And you. MAYYA They say they’re gonna put me in a foster
home till I’m eighteen. I’m gonna have to move out of the city. CLIVE I know. MAYYA I don’t want to move. I don’t want to live
with some people I don’t know. CLIVE Other than that, how are you feeling? MAYYA It doesn’t feel real. CLIVE Not at first. But it’ll set in, then it’ll
get tough, really tough, then it slowly becomes more bearable. MAYYA You know a lot about this. CLIVE I do. MAYYA How did your…? CLIVE Cancer. MAYYA I’m sorry. CLIVE It was ages ago. MAYYA How did you survive? CLIVE Well, my father was there. MAYYA Oh… CLIVE But it didn’t make it any easier, really.
But…I don’t know, I don’t know how I survived, I just did. And you will too.
Everything will turn out alright. MAYYA You promise? CLIVE I promise. MAYYA You wouldn’t lie to me? CLIVE I’m your manager; I could never lie to you. [Pause] MAYYA Josh told me that you were going away. CLIVE Yeah. MAYYA Are you? CLIVE Yeah. MAYYA Please don’t. CLIVE It’ll be okay. MAYYA I need you. CLIVE You don’t. You’re strong. You’re so much
stronger than I ever was, okay? You’re a warrior. You’ll do just fine without
me. MAYYA When will you come back? [Clive doesn’t answer.] Clive? CLIVE You have to understand that the decisions
that I make, none of that has anything to do with you. MAYYA What are you talking about? CLIVE You were the best thing that’s ever happened
to me. And I’m gonna try to return the favor as best I can but I want you to
know that there’s a lot else going on with me that wasn’t caused by you and has
absolutely nothing to do with you. Okay? MAYYA What do you…? CLIVE Okay? MAYYA Okay. CLIVE Just trust me. [Clive goes up close to
Mayya and holds her head in is hands.] I will always remember you, Mayya. [He kisses her on the
forehead. Josh walks back in.] JOSH There’s an officer outside. He said he wants
to speak with Mayya for a bit. CLIVE [to Mayya] Go on. MAYYA I don’t want to. CLIVE I know. But you have to and you will because
you’re a warrior, right? MAYYA Right. [Mayya goes to leave.] CLIVE Mayya? [Mayya stops and turns to
look at him.] Don’t forget to write that song about me,
okay? MAYYA [Smiling] Okay. [She leaves.] CLIVE What did the cop say? JOSH He asked if we’d be okay with taking care of
Mayya for a bit longer until they can figure things out. CLIVE And you said? JOSH I said of course. You know it’s no problem. [Pause] What are you thinking, man? CLIVE I’m thinking I’ve got to get away from all of
this. JOSH So you’re just gonna run away? What about
Mayya, or Sarah, or…what about me? CLIVE You guys will be okay. JOSH You can’t be so sure. CLIVE Mayya’s unstoppable, she’ll come out on top,
tell Sarah I left a check for her in the copy of Tropic of Cancer that I left
in the apartment. And I uh…that French girl, Marion, she’s single on Facebook.
Now would be your chance. [He hugs Josh] Thanks for everything, man. Take care of the
girls for me. JOSH And you’re leaving? Just like that? CLIVE Just like that. JOSH Where you gonna go? CLIVE Moscow. JOSH What are you gonna do there? CLIVE I’m gonna try to fit in with a new kind of
crowd. [The lights slowly fade on
Clive but remain on Josh, standing on stage, by himself.] © 2013 KevinAuthor's Note
