Apology

Apology

A Poem by Paper Doll

I’m sorry
Things were never meant
to get this bad
You may feel the sorrow
and I feel the cold
But we both share loneliness
perhaps differently
but still loneliness

The rattling of the bones
from all the skeletons in the closet
became unbearable
the baggage far too heavy
the burden too much to bear
And when spirits we thoughts were dead
rose from their graves
we started to feel the chill
a familiar chill
that we both knew well

The cold was nipping at me
biting at me
I needed to run away
like I always used to do
Run away
The cold was starting to numb me
And so I left you
undead but not quite alive

We were slowly dying
dying
dying
I could feel death
creeping upon us
Could you?
Did you feel it?
Faint at first
but then
it grew heavy

I thought I knew
what had to be done
though the choice
had already been
decided for me
this may be
for the best
please understand

Without me
you are injured
with me
you are in pain
So I must leave
We are dying
dying
dead
