The ballad of World War II - 1939

The ballad of World War II - 1939

A Poem by Kenneth Nicholas Lowe

As Foch, predicated 69 days too early
The world was set ablaze again, with glory
The build was tense, the bluffs were won
A single man, Napolean's Austrian son

His Stukas rained hell, his men trained well
They blitzed and stopped only to bring death's smell
We awed, while fearless and few applaud
Europa again was plunged into a state of war

While the east was carved, inspite of old rivalries
Old friends, seemed like potential enemies
We diplomated, we mobilized, we sounded the call
Only to gather behind the Maginot wall

The Poles a victim of trust and treaties
Was split in a russian, german frenzy
And help, oh help, we know it to come
The French and Brits, won't sit on their bums

The Ulhans rode out, the pride of the poles
The horses were later filled with 57mm holes
As the dust now had settled, the tanks rode on
Lord Cardigan's history, sadly went on

19th century charge vs 20th century machine
The end was certain, to the brave yet unseen
The few in the air were shot to the ground
The mechanised showcase, on field was never found

Warsaw in sight, the panzers arent stopping
Madrid had it easy, Stukas incoming!!!
As the world watched in shock and horror
The west moved a mile, just to return by the morrow

The russians from the east and germans from the west
The Brits and French behind the maginot, they rest
Enslaved, subjected and worse yet to come
The few and the free, to England they run

Beneath the sea, the first blow was struck
The innocent, 129 lives out of luck
The surface was tested but to it in vain
The royal navy played well at its naval game
The Graf Spree was, a glimmer of hope
The RAF, at best, a flying joke

The russians move north, a david is waiting
The goliath is huge, his armies are haunting
To Mannerheim they slog to death and devestation
The Finns inflict a second humiliation
At par with the poles, the finns fair better
The Russians are not masters of the winter weather

In asia it continued, like business as usual
Chinese and Japanese, in the contest on cruel
China at a loss, moving civilization west
Bushido code, behind sans rest
Rape and pillage, slaved and murder
Nanking was the site of a 3 day bloody slaughter

And thus it ends, the camps have been set
The allies unchosen, their armies to test
The sideshows in place, the tides now are rolling
The east secure, the west have it coming

Thank you...I'm trying to cover all 5 years...
This was a very interesting piece. It is the horrors of war, but set up more strategically and in "big picture narrative" than emotionally. I have read a lot of work on what war does to an individual, but not as many on a larger scale. Well done, thank you for sharing this!
