Thebes

Thebes

A Poem by Ken e Bujold

Ah, Thebes, the city of countless contradictions.

Amun-Ra’s Glass & Gold confectionary,

temple of light, perpetually under siege, be-choked

by its drear and gloomy cast of shadows --

so many sharp-elbowed swindlers, beggars and

brigands looking to empty pockets …

the incessant tide of penitents always in need of

an honest soothsayer. What business had I there?

Still unscarred by grief, too young to know

the disheartening latitudes of snake-eyes --

that worse was still to come -- that fate

had barely begun to toy with me. Though Sugar

and Spice, Hathor’s well-versed Sesame Seeds,

fluent in the arts of conversation, soon schooled me

to the predatory ways of a tongue … how

love only lasted as long as it took to unstitch a purse.

Dear Jen
You are quite an ancient historian which I admire…. In this piece I believe you have little faith in the city of Thebes… it seems like there is the glorious rich( glass and gold) anthem the beggars and the swindlers….and while searching for love, learned the hard way that love might be stealing a purse!
Definitely a city of contradictions! Very nice piece Ken
