Thoughts of Troy

Thoughts of Troy

A Poem by Ken e Bujold

Imagine Odysseus staggering home,

returning from his night out, still

flushed with excitement, reeking

of adventure, a little too much

revelry, overindulgence, the bon

hemeur of other lads, miscreants,

rattling about his head …

Penelope waiting by the door,

Telemachus at her hip …

It’s a story I’ve written

so often I know the lines by

heart -- like the two times

tables I memorized way back

when,

          before

the mushrooming multiplications

of aches, past due notices,

diapers, childcare, braces

swamped across intentions,

any notion of sailing off alone.

But would you have been happy? 😃

What a use of the legend. Coming home from the pub I doubt he would have drawn through all those axes.
Excellent use of words.

You made the right choice. At least you didn't have to deal with Penelope's would be boyfriends.
