Semiotics

A Poem by Ken e Bujold

something happened here

once before

the slow suck of progression

erased all memory of

time then when

we labored with

sticks and stones

the simpler illusions

of mobility bred

into our bones

things less clever

never quite

like anything we say

we now understand

of a before

we took the first few hesitant

steps to make land

uninhabitable.

Mankind; Earth's cockroaches as it turns out. Not predators. Not top of the food change. Just scavengers that leave ugly in our wake.
