Since I don't believe in promises, I might read your poem a little differently than most people. If someone promises me forever love, I laugh, becuz humans don't have that much say-so in what happens in life. So I feel your narrator is petulantly insisting on promises, but then slowly caving to the reality that life may not guarantee anything, but still, the deepest love grows out of the disappointments & consequent understandings (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie
