SurpriseA Poem by Kelley QuinnA quilt of wool, scratchy and heavy, Covers and wraps her cold little body. It’s been a few months, one or three, She smiles and gestures, “Come sit by me.” I can’t look at her face, because I don’t understand, The fear in my eyes, the shake of my hand. The end is too near; the shock is too strong; What am I to do, if it turns out I’m wrong? A plug, a life, a heart of beats: resting, resting, A pedal of weeps. Her sympathetic eyes take over my mind. I need to destroy these stories of mine. A finish never started: A tale with no end. In a downpour of thoughts, I needed a friend. The ending never came, the ideas silently died. Can you forgive me if it turns out I lied? You were, you are, a creation of mine. But it’s been too much of heartfelt time. Thank you, I say, for never letting go. Please, I beg you, I need you to know. Now shut your eyes, imagine no pain. Pretend I’m not leaving, my departure of vain. Goodbye, goodbye. I’ll remember thy name. © 2011 Kelley Quinn |
