Sometimes

Sometimes

A Poem by Kelley Quinn

Sometimes
I pretend my fingernails
are fish scales --
artificial shine through
the ocean waves.

Sometimes I curl my
hands tight,
put them up to my ear,
and listen for the waves
that break with each
heart beat.

Sometimes I hold my arms
like wings and stand so
so tall and hope the wind
takes me away, carries me home.

Sometimes I breathe
like the ocean, full of salt
and anger and fear.

Sometimes -
I pretend my fingernails
are fish scales --
swimming through the ocean,
searching for some place
to call home.

This is a believable, beautiful fantasy, Kelley - the first such piece have read for a long, long time. Seems you have created your very own drama, scene by scene:. Brava, bouquets galore! :)

I like this line about the fish scales. I think I've done that before, as well.
