I Knew I Loved You When I Danced With YouA Poem by Kelley QuinnApparently our entire universe is in a constant state of expansion. Even when we’re touching, our molecules resist, like two magnets suspended in space. Like two lovers: one on land, reaching towards the other as the boat takes him farther and farther away from her fingertips. But even when her fingers touched his cheek, his shoulder, she could never truly touch him. There is the thinnest sheet of glass between us and a sign: Please don’t touch. As if that could stop us. The reason we always feel like we need to be closer, closer, closer is because we have to hold on, in fear that gravity will betray us, pull us apart faster than the universe already does. Don’t let go, Jack. I’m in a constant state of contraction. Our bodies will collapse, absorbing the energy dancing between our cells. We will expand and expand until we make our own microcosm, big enough to hold in our hands, and small enough to swallow whole. You will be the sun -- and I, I will be the little meteor, caught in your galactic warmth. I’ll orbit you, hoping that, one day, I’ll be important enough to you, that one day you’ll look at me and call me a planet. © 2016 Kelley Quinn |
