Red As Ruth

Red As Ruth

A Poem by Kelley Quinn

I hold onto secrets like rose petals

I open it and everyone turns to

stare because the petals are in my hands

in my hair

under my skin

like words

And the roses

are too bright

red

alive

but they’re broken, too.

And the rusty

black

box

holds

nothing

of life

The petals escape,

dancing on the air,

twirling

and

curling like

fingers

on the hand

of the little girl

waving goodbye

The wind won’t

stop breathing

life back into

them, no matter

how quickly

the petals

fall

But

The wind stops

The petals drop

Rotten

Brown

One by one

How beautifully and uniquely you have captured life and related it to such a simple thing and make it at the same time so fragile and so complicated. I especially love the last few lines and how they depict that although life, like the rose, can be so beautiful, it sometimes is so broken.
