To Dream

To Dream

A Poem by Kelley Quinn

The stars are out tonight.

When I can’t sleep, I like to look up and

spin, spin, spin,

until I’m falling into the stars and

diamond eyes catch me, whispering

you are eternal

into my ear.

Don’t let me go. Let me stay with you,

become you, until

the walls of my mind start caving in,

decaying from my abandonment.

Everything I ever thought was beautiful is

Eclipsed by yours.

Stars are stories in the sky:

I want to read them all and take you

home with me, but

You are no slave.

You do not belong to me, but

To the darkness.

I stopped watching the news a long time ago,

because I had already lost my faith in humanity.

I took it back and threw it up to the stars

and they caught it with their diamond eyes,

cut perfectly. I want to squeeze through those holes

to find the secret to eternal sunshine.

I take a thousand breaths in and

a thousand breaths out and

I spin.

            I drift.

                        I dream.

I let myself stare until I become.

I am darkness; I am light.

I am the line in between where no one can see me.

I sleep in the shape of a boomerang,

in hopes that, one day, the stars will come back to me.
