From The Kitchen

From The Kitchen

A Poem by Kejo

Mother cries

Brother lies

He says he's doing fine

But I listen

From the kitchen

Hear what I'm not meant to hear

Father smiles

As he dials

He's been on the phone since lunch

But I listen

From the kitchen

And hear the truth he tries to hide

Mother cries

Brother lies

He says it's going to be alright

But I listen

From the kitchen

I hear the tears he tries to deny

Father walks

Grandpa talks

Discussing the farm over coffee

But I listen

From the kitchen

Hear them whisper the truth to themselves

Auntie's Christian

Mother listens

They talk like normal over tea

But I listen

From the kitchen

And hear them speak of God

Mother fears

Brother nears

They do not talk of the coming end

But I listen

From the kitchen

Hearing something more than sound
