Modern Man By Modern Means

Modern Man By Modern Means

A Poem by K Scott Smith

I belong to the stars,
and you belong to the sea.
Last song, final poem,
each letter of each word exhausted.

A time for quiet
for silence

Made of wool,
on a broken loom,
when words no longer move,
or prove-(anything),
and ceases to amuse(anyone),
My heart has truly been removed.

strangers on ladders
climbing up and down
never certain which.

I bound my heart to some logic
that was itself bound to wild horses
unbreakable or  unbroken energies,
running their own wild courses.

In the course of an hour, a day, or an age,
-all the moments that pass you laughing,
only atomic clocks note their passing.

Modern Man,
by modern means,
organic life become machine
my rose becomes utility
words, no longer set on paper,
to be born in such an age,
with heroes such as mine!!!

Count me among the savages,
and barbarians,
I shall have my books!

Have I come too late?
Have I arrived just in time?

Once,
having the strength, and confidence of ten men,
I did challenge each star, as if each were a senator.

Have I come too late?
Have I arrived just in time?

I love the wild horses metaphor. It gives a clear image to the moving power of emotions. The sadness gives way to adventure. Wondering if the wild horses will jump the precipice or seek green pastures more easily reached. I found this poem to be rich in beautiful images and thought provoking.

These a fair amount of symbolism in this poem! Did you do it on purpose????
