The Olympic Finale

The Olympic Finale

A Poem by Keith
"

My 5 & 7 year old granddaughters rang excited about their new billy cart. They had been watching the London Olympics and had decided that one day they would be olympians too.

"

We are crossing live where there is action a plenty,
To the Cairns Olympics in Twenty - Twenty.
Our On The spot reporter is Stephanie Rice
A Former Olympian, she always looks nice.
Yes thanks Eddy, Its always a Thrill,
I am watching the race from the top of the Hill.
One Team will win, the rest will fall short,
Billy cart Racing is my favourite sport.
There's the Chinese team with No Slo and Wee Lee.
Olympic Champions, hoping for Victory.
Sally & Sue  are doing their dance,
The American team, they have a good chance.
Big Cheer for our Aussie Girls, Chelsea and Grace,
Its their very first Olympics. Can they win this race?
Local girls from right here in Cairns,
With a pink billy cart and matching head bands,
Now they're lined up at the top of the hill,
They will be going so fast, we might see a spill.
Everything’s quiet, they are ready to start,
Can the Aussie girls win in their Pink Billy Cart?
There is the gun, hear it crack,
Grace is steering, Chelsea on the back
Pushing hard down the slope,
America is behind, they have no hope.
The Chinese are leading and going so fast,
But our girls are determined, to go right past.
Round the first bend Wee Lee cuts the corner,
The official frowned, he will have to warn her.
To the next bend at a frightening pace,
Its looking scary, better slow down Grace!
Not on your life she's after that medal,
Not a hope she's touching that brake pedal.
Closing the gap and so close to the edge,
They cut it so fine they got scratched by a hedge.
Now they are level, who will be the winners?
The experienced Chinese or our Aussie beginners?
The crowd is all standing, cheering the Aussies,
In their pink billy cart with green and gold cossies.
Side by side they race to the line.
But our girls are in front and Win Gold this time.

Well Keith it goes without saying that they were going to win!!! This is adorable and you know, eventually I'd love to see a book of your poetry in every school in Aus. Kids would love your storytelling ability in poetry. I am sure kids would prance and dance around to your rhymes and giggle, cheer and even cry at your stories.
Your poems are always filled with an abundance of life.
Another much enjoyed read.

I remember reading this and enjoying it earlier this week but I think WC was wonky that day because I obviously didn't review it. This is a wonderful story. It's fun, light hearted and the rhyme is gentle, natural, I found myself saying Go Go! and cheering the girls on!

Very cool Keith. This brings back my youth building soap box racers and looking for that perfect hill. Very nice.

Thank you Carol.
Australia, Australia! (cant remember the rest of that tune.....) being a transplanted Brit on American soil, i was ambivalent about the outcome, but an exciting race and a predictable outcome. well done!
