regression

regression

A Poem by Kees Kapteyn

Illness weakens something in my core

Causes a collapse, threatens my global balance

Something in me is upset

In my heart, the entrance to my stomach

The seat of my soul

This weakness hearkens me to

Cling to something fundamental

A pillar, a parent,

A support column I need to look for

I fight this petulant fear

With the strength of my years

And rise strong against the malaise

Strong and fierce am I

I love the ending, on a strong and hopeful note. Having suffered from depression off and on since childhood, that is what the illness meant for me in this poem. I like the phrase "threatens my global balance" - just right.
