equilibriumA Poem by Kees KapteynUpon waking, His head is an empty vessel To be speedily fed awareness and thought Before he must leave for work. A coffee will facilitate this. The heavy ache of withdrawal is softened with acetaminophen Then a second coffee achieves a semblance of equilibrium. At work, His focus is to tread unscathed through this day. His selective ignorance shields him From the second thought one had When one surrenders a sacrifice And one's martyrdom as well. Tonight, There are several intended beers Awaiting him at the pub To wash away the grit of the day And to soak his mind in brine. He will drive home with his senses turned away From his natural state of pain. © 2008 Kees Kapteyn |
