Red TwineA Poem by A Glow in the Pit of My Soul
The day’s events have thrown us off kilter-
our hips shifted and spines twisted- like a sudden surge of scoliosis, brought on by a runaway tongue. A rusted wrench hucked out of left field, into the recently well-oiled cogs of our co-existence. The smoother ride we were growing so accustomed to became a jolting, jerking heartdroppedtoourstomachs endeavor within only a minute’s time. A crooked smile washes over my lips bloodied from teeth digging into tongue, as my fingers play with the red thread emerging from your chest. Unraveled and trailing across the bed, reminding me of your eyelashes brushing against my cheek the last time we held each other this close. I will tie bows and knots and loopholes- lassos around our bodies- binding our physical shells as our souls already are. If we mummify our hearts, perhaps it will shield them from the brunt of this storm. The flowers under our tongues have wilted and we realize its time to move on again. Home is where ever your arms are. A room, a car, a bench in a park at midnight. And despite the misalignment of the seasons, I know things will eventually be ok, as long as we have each other; Twisted up in red twine. None of this comes close to what I actually want to say. The words just won’t come easily these days. © 2015 A Glow in the Pit of My SoulReviews
