Let Go

Let Go

A Poem by Kay

Let me be frank, a little and enough,

you do not know how to love.

Bearing their mountains,

wearing their storms -

when do you keep yourself warm?

In this fantastic sea,

you raise their ships and quietly bleed.

To their darkness, you gift your light,

with nothing left inside at night.

You fill their glasses right to brim,

running your mind thin and grim.

A martyr where it need not be;

self-chained from a sky so free.

While they drink from your sweet sweat,

your purpose solemnly forgets.

Who am I, where do I go?

Both of which you used to know.

Alone in a forest,

blown by demand  -

though your own quest sinks through sand.

But the gate of liberty is just a string -

let go of this kite and spread your wing.

Interesting character sketch in this one. The voice seems to be addressing another, but it could just as easily be a self lecture. The subject is self sacrificial, co-dependency type behaviors. The addressee apparently has a history of compulsively putting others first at the cost of personal happiness. The speaker is giving a sort of pep talk to change this behavior in favor of concentration on personal goals that have long been on the back burner. Hopefully this encouragement will help, but sometimes these tendencies have been indulged for so long that altering them can be a difficult process.
