Fort Wayne Stole My Heart

Fort Wayne Stole My Heart

A Story by Kay

I've been taking walks around Fort Wayne for the past few days since it has been absolutely gorgeous. Maybe it's the warm weather and the sun painting the sky in a surreal, fantastic display, or the fact that it's spring break and I'm not in class... or the fact that I've gone to a coffee house every day of the week for the whole day, but I suddenly feel better. I no longer feel the urge to smash my head repeatedly into a wall and I picked myself up from the beating Life gave me a week ago (you know, the kicking me in the rib cages while I was huddled in the fetal position weeping).

But today I was sitting on one of the benches in front of the court house, watching the pigeons and following the many flowing designs of the architecture. I was trying to study my flashcards of the "dead white guys" for anthropology, but the flap of wings from above converted my attention every time. Jacque Derrida be damned and Victor Turner can suck it; it's too beautiful of a day in the magical city of Fort Wayne to care about old, dead white guys. There was something magical sitting in that lonely square surrounded by the buildings reflecting the setting sun and the evening sky framed by the Lincoln Bank building, the cars stopping and going all around me, the people walking to and from their cars and smoking their cigarettes, the pigeons flapping away from the clock on top of the dome of the court house, Calhoun Street surrounded by a line of trees and the sky bridges... all of it, god I love it all!

Fort Wayne really has stolen my heart...

Nice Tribute to a city that holds beauty! Your words have given me the want to explore it's nooks and cranny's more the next time I'm through that part of the country. Often times it's a blur out the side of a window.

Cities can do this to a person, Draw them in with their history and timeless treasures, even if one of the biggest treasures is just sitting and drinking it all in.

Great Write!
