Chapter 6

“No! We have to Chase!” Glue shouted again. It was 6 in the morning now. Chase and Glue woke Clara and Sara up when they learned Chase’s fate. Glue was still arguing that they had to go to the hospital.

“Glue, it’s over run by MIGs. Three well known fugitives showing up? They won’t help, and you know it.” Sara said quietly. Her head was down, her face blotchy from crying.

“We can try d****t!” Glue pounded a fist on the table.

“How will trying help?” Snapped Chase bitterly, “I still say we do what I think we should!”

“But you’ll die!” Clara butted in, shaking her head. “We should stay here, and keep you healthy. It’s only best for you sweetie.” Clara soothed, putting a hand on Chase’s.

“To hell with what’s good for me!” Chase screamed angrily. “How about what’s good for the world?” No one would meet her stare. Chase took a deep breath.

“Look, I know this is bad. I’ve been Chase for less than a day now. When I woke up in that box, I had nothing but my name. Nothing to remember and nothing to care for. Then I met you guys. Now I have three great people in my life. Now I have three great things to care for. Now I have three things I need to protect.

“I know you care for me too, but one possible life for billions of others? Which one would you choose? Clara, you yourself have seen what their able to do!” Clara cringed away, remembering her husband and son the MIGs brutally killed. “My point is that I’m going down to The G.R.I.P. Now, whether that’s alone or with other able fighters is up to you. I’m leaving now, while I can. Goodbye.”

Chaser grabbed her bag she had packed while Glue had woken Clara and Sara. Inside where guns, ammo, and grenades. In her pocket was a steak dinner knife.  She found these items in Glue’s room. What a shock.

She was in the sewer, walking quickly through the winding tunnels. A hand slipped into hers. She glanced over to see Sara smiling slightly, with war paint under her eyes. She was wearing grey camouflage.

“You won’t make it out of these tunnels without me.” Sara smiled. Chase felt tears sting her eyes. She wiped them away, and hugged Sara.

“You won’t live five minutes without me.” A deep voice added. Chase turned, and glanced up sat the face of a smiling Glue. Chase shook her head and hugged him too. Glue put a finger under her chin and tilted her face up.

“You can do better than that.” He breathed. He kissed her, and Chase’s world suddenly exploded.

She kissed him back, putting her arms around his neck. The world fell away.

Until Sara had the need to start gagging really loudly in the background.

“No, no, go back to kissing,” Sara said sarcastically. “It’s not like the world is being taken over or anything.”

“Oh, okay!” Teased Chase, sneaking another kiss. Sara smacked her upside the head. And then they were walking. Where to? The G.R.I.P.

“What does G.R.I.P stand for anyway?” Chase asked, with a slight shiver from the sewers dampness.

“General Rollwood’s Intensive Programming center.” Sara said with a slight smile, pulling the trio down another corridor.

“Well, wouldn’t that be G.R.I.P.C?”

Sara shook her head. “I guess, but G.R.I.P is a better acronym.” Chase was still giggling when they immerged from the damp tunnel. A shaky little gasp was let out of the trio. The G.R.I.P was far more intimidating then they could have ever perceived. Dark, tall buildings touched the sky, all arranged in a neat and exact semi-circle. The largest building happened to be the one with the most tinted windows, and it was at the top of the half-circle.

“Well… this is it then.” Whispered Chase. Sara, tears forming in her eyes, shook her head.

“No! I know you’ll make out of this Chase. You have to.” Chase hugged her friend. Even though they had only known each other for barely a day, Chase couldn’t imagine life without here. But, Chase supposed, I won’t have too.

Trembling, Chase took the lead towards the building. Loading her gun, Chase made sure the others did the same. With a small battle cry, she ran into the building, ready to except her inevitable death.
