Chapter 1

Chase was stuck. Well, not so much stuck, so much as trapped in a tiny little box where she could barely breathe, let alone move. So, I guess you can say she was stuck/trapped. But the thing was, Chase wasn’t sure why she was in that box. In fact, she didn’t even know if Chase was her name. She just woke up stuck/trapped, and remembered the word/name Chase. She decided it was quite odd. She then spent the next 30 seconds pushing against all sides of the tiny box. She didn’t have enough room, however, to push hard enough to open it. Therefore, it was only a matter of minutes before she suffocated. There was no possible way out, and if she waited, by the time someone found her, she’d be dead. So, with that, Chase waited to die.

Waiting to die isn’t nearly as bad as one would think. Usually, you spend your final moments remembering good times, bad times, friends, family and pets. Chase had none of that. She only had the word/name Chase.  She was quite bored. She, also, hadn’t the faintest idea what the hell was going on. Just when she was sure she was about to die, Chase heard something. No, not something, someone. A joyous feeling rose in Chase’s body and she got enough courage to scream to the person: “DEAR LORD IN HEAVEN!!! HELP ME! I’M TRAPPED IN A TINY LITTLE BOX! HELPHELPHELPHELP!!”

How could anyone not hear that? Footsteps drew near the box. There was a slight cracking sound, and then the top was torn off of the small, wooden box. Chase took a deep breath, letting the fresh air fill her lungs. She breathed deeply and quickly for several minutes, before, eventually, a voice snapped, “Hey! Stop before you pass out!” Chase looked into the face of her hero.

She was tall. Really tall. Or maybe it was the fact that Chase was lying down on the ground. She got up. Nope, still ridiculously tall. Or maybe Chase was just short? She glanced back at the tall girl, and noticed her eyes were a pale green. Are my eyes green? Chase wondered. The tall girl hmphed and crossed her arms.

“Well?” The girl seemed annoyed. Why?

“Uh… What color are my eyes?” Chase finally asked. The girl got all red and smacked Chase upside the head.

“Didn’t anyone ever teach you manners?!” She snapped. Chase rubbed her head and thought for a second.

“Thank you?” Chase said uneasily, not wanting to get hit again.

The girl nodded.

“That’s better!” She looked around uneasily. “Ok, we got a few moments. Why are you In Dr. Creeps lab?”

“I don’t know. Say, do you know my name?” Chase was growing desperate.

“Why the hell would I know that?” snapped the girl. “I can tell you mine though. I’m Sara!” Sara grinned.

“I’m…uh…Chase!” Chase decided that no one probably knew her name. Sara smiled slightly. She opened her mouth to say something, but was cut off by the buzzing of an intercom.

“Oh crap!” Sara gasped in horror. She ran herself over the intercom, and thought for half a second, shaking her hands, trying to think. While Sara flipped out, Chase took a look around. There were other wooden boxes all around the room; hers was on the very left. The room was circular, and in the center was a cylinder stretching from the ceiling to the floor. Everything (except for the boxes) was metal plated. There was a large computer hooked up the cylinder. Slumped against it was what looked like an elderly man, with short, graying hair. His face was smooshed against the keyboard. Chase walked over to the man, and poked his face.

“Don’t touch him you fool!” Sara screamed in a horrified whisper.

Chase backed away, sheepish. The intercom buzzed again.

“Sir?” the voice was high and nasally, and buzzed slightly.

“Uh…Uh…” Sara started to shake her hands again.

With a sigh, Chase walked over, and in a deep voice pressed the big red button and responded with a “Yes?”

“Sir are you alright?” the nasal voice sounded slightly concerned.

“Uh, yes,” Chase continued to use the deep voice, “I have a cold.”

“OK sir, would you like something to help you with your cold?”

“No, I’m going to uh, take a nap. If I don’t respond, I’m asleep.”

“Ok sir.” The intercom buzzed once more, then turned off.

Sara turned to Chase, and in awe, asked her how she came up with that so quickly.

          Chase shrugged. “I don’t know.”

Sara smiled, and then glanced at her watch. She cussed loudly, then grabbed Chase’s wrist. She shoved the metal door open, and began running. Chase could barely keep up.

“Wait!” Chase cried, “what’s going on!?”

Sara panted slightly “Don’t *pant* have *pant* time to *pant* talk!”  She sped up, and Chase nearly tripped. “If you trip, I’m leaving you behind!” hissed Sara.

“Tell me what’s happening!” Chase was scared. The entire building was paneled with metal plates. There were no other signs of life. Sara didn’t respond to Chase’s plea and exited the building with Chase in tow. What Chase saw outside the building made her gasp in horror. The buildings were destroyed, crumpled. The sky was a sickly grey. The roads were more pothole than road. Nothing but grey. Chase had no memory of the world before this, but she knew this couldn’t be right.

Sara slowed down and pushed Chase behind a building. Sara stood next to her and leaned against the wall, as if to hide. Sara glanced around the building and surveyed the area. Chase was confused about what she was looking for. But she ignored that. She was shaking from the bitter cold. Bitter, bitter cold. Her toes already had no feeling. Chase looked towards her feet and saw she wasn’t wearing any shoes. She glanced towards the building in front of her, and let out a gasp of extreme horror.

A body was hanging from a piece of wood jutting out of the wood. The sight of the poor boy brought her too her knees. Chase heard Sara’s voice far away, calling her name. A sudden stab of pain in her head, and Chase’s vision faded out.

I liked it, especially how Sara is so bossy and well, awesome! That's all I can really think of right now... good job!

Very interesting. Ended in a way I want to know more. I especially liked your choice of words for the last line, her vision "faded out.' rather than she passed out like so many people tend to put. A fair bit of humor in there, too. Great read =)

Intriguing start, and a bit humorous I though. I really like the way you opened up this book, I'd like to see what will happen to Chase and what's really going on. Keep it up!
