My World Of Silence

My World Of Silence

A Poem by Katrina Roberts
"

A brief description of how I feel as I am going deaf

"
In my world of silence there is so much to fear. I never know if someone approaches, their footsteps I can not hear.

This lonely road of hearing loss is slowly driving me insane. If only you understood that our worlds are not the same.

They tell me everything will be okay, those words they wouldn't say. For there is nothing I can do, as my world slips away.

Imagine a day of nothing. No sound of music, laughter, or cats. Please do not tell or get upset with me, that is all I ask.

Your actions speak volumes to me, so keep that in mind. Help me down this journey, perhaps understanding you will find.

I know I make you angry, and I do not mean to try. I can't even count all the times I broke down to cry.

In my world of silence, how badly I need you near. Because our worlds are not the same, silence is all I hear.

I wasn't even looking at that stuff. I was too busy reading what you were saying.
Have you learned ASL yet? If not, you should do it now.
You will meet other people who are going deaf, and the families and friends of those in the deaf community. Yes, there is a deaf community; I had a good friend in the 60s whose husband was deaf. I went to the ASL classes she taught. I think it would be harder to learn it if you were deaf.
I am going blind, so I know how you feel. Sort of.
