Mountaineer

Mountaineer

A Poem by Katie Kistler

I’m moving at a snail’s pace with you
and it feels good, don’t it
finding somebody that thinks like you?
taking baby steps and looking away shyly
to see if we should backtrack or keep on climbing
oh, it’s a treacherous slope as you know
could lead nowhere but it might just lead to home

and I’ve been climbing back down for some time now
crested at the bottom and took another look around
realized that I could have gone down farther
so I’m right back in the middle of it now

do you want to hold the rope?
or do you want to cut it off and never know
what could have happened?
the do’s and don’t’s
leave the rock face behind and face it
it’s a long way up, but I can taste it

I’m staring at a perfect sunset with you
and it’s so new, darling
finding someone to sit and listen to you
walk as big as you talk, if you’d like
or never follow up, that would be fine
you can tease me and laugh any time
and if you want to, you can always drop a line

and I’ve been saying that I’ll never fall again
someone once cut the rope and I thought I’d be dead
I only earned a couple scars and busted ribs
but for you, I think I want to try again

do you want to hold the rope?
or do you want to cut it off and never know
what could have happened?
the do’s and don’t’s
leave the rock face behind and face it
it’s a long way up, but I can taste it

home
it could be home
home
it could be home

I enjoyed the metaphor here. There's a lot of climbing and rope work involved to peak in a relationship. If you ain't got there yet, keep working on it. The summit is worth it.
