KyotoA Poem by Katie KistlerPhoebe Bridgers inspired, about reminiscing on a near death experience with near strangers in a place that isn’t quite home anymore
when I was spun out
on a snowy country road with my best friend and her brother and some girl I didn’t know got me thinking how we almost really truly died Charlie asking “is this heaven?” man, for all I know that might be right well it was so quiet on the windy midwest nights outside watching smoke billow in the wind from little fires In our chests and in our lungs cause we were so young nothing could ever hurt us was I wrong? the preacher starting conversations that we never meant to have in the dead of winter praying that it wouldn’t be our last but it all comes to an end eventually I guess we’ll see where that finally leaves you and me kyoto reminds me of the friends I never had always knew I’d leave them in the dust without a chance cause I’d never come back to hold hands like that never came back to say I’d see them again © 2020 Katie Kistler |
