Dear Alina

Dear Alina

A Poem by Katie Kistler

Dear Alina, did you know what you were doing?
Give me freedom to insult the hand that wooed me
When you fed me with your pretty words
And lips that promised such sweet softness
Told me that it wouldn’t hurt
Before you called it off and knocked me down

And I’m thinking bout the ways you did me wrong when we were younger
Made me think that I was crazy cause you played me like a sucker
And I distinctly remember when you told me that you loved me
Indirectly but you said it and I blushed to think you could be
Telling me the truth
That was all I wanted from you

Dear Alina, can you tell that I’ve been drinking?
Only thinking about the time it was a “we” thing
Now I’ll feed you with my pretty words
And lips that promise such sweet harshness
If it’s blunt enough to hurt
God help me to finally knock you down

Cause I’m thinking bout the things you said to me when we were sober
Made me mad enough to see that this was always sort of over
It was never really anything at all and you’d just tricked me
You like people when they like you so I guess the rest is history
To you but I
Never really let it slide

Why would you hold my hand?
Why would you kiss me like that?
Why would you pick a man
To put your love on like that?
Why would you talk to me
Like you were oh so keen?
Why would you look at me
If you weren’t gonna touch me like that?

Dear Alina, why would you hide your heart?
Dear Alina, why are we torn apart?
Dear Alina, why the baggage claim?
Dear Alina, why an unforgettable name?
