The Girl You Were

The Girl You Were

A Poem by Katie Kistler

She's just a drunken mess
One step backward from a wreck
I know
But I still love her so
With half a cigarette
A beer in hand and cracking lips
So cold
It looks like she brought snow

When she's on the front porch
Will she be there next year
Warmer in demeanor
And choking down her fear

Oh honey, I remember you from years ago
Sweeter than the berries in your hair
Oh honey, I will not forget the girl you were
The bridges that you've burned to get you here

She's just a broken line
Nothing like that friend of mine
I knew
But what else could I do
With one last cigarette
A parting word from when we met
It's true
I think I'm done with you

When she's running circles
And lost inside her mind
Getting nowhere faster
We're leaving her behind

But honey, I remember you from years ago
Sweeter than the berries in your hair
Oh honey, I will not forget the girl you were
The bridges that you've burned to get you here
