She Loves You Not

She Loves You Not

A Poem by Katie Kistler

Your stomach is an oven
Burning butterflies to crisps
Cause now you're thinking of her
And the smudged color of her lips
She placed so close to your ear
The peeling skin tickled you pink
It felt adjacent to fear
It left you prickly and it wouldn't let you sleep

Your hands are pinned to the floor
Limp and pliant in her grasp
Cause now she's looking at you
Biting her lip and will she ask
If she can sate your hunger
The air of longing in your sighs
That's tied a knot in your throat
Or will she leave it undefined

She loves you
She loves you not
She loves you
So sweet your teeth could rot
She loves you
She loves you not
She loves you
At least that's what you thought

Your eyes are broken lifelines
Casting out and catching air
Cause you're still on the sidelines
Trailing after her but she's still unaware
Of all the conversations
You have with her when you're all alone at night
That feel like revelations
But you're naive and disillusioned as a child

Her hands are holding you down
As if she wants keep you close
Cause now she's stroking your arm
Over the fake fur of your coat
And you're afraid to move too much
Cause you don't want to scare her off
But then she pulls away too soon
You want to beg her not to stop

Cause you know
She loves you
She loves you not
She loves you
So sweet your teeth could rot
She loves you
She loves you not
She loves you
At least that's what you thought
