Flower Press

Flower Press

A Poem by Katie Kistler

Don't forget about the smiles on their faces
The ones you saw before you left to see new places
They'll be okay just like you should be today
They'll be alright just like you should be tonight

You'll meet new people, my love
You'll make new friends
And just because it's something new
The old things don't come to an end

Don't forget that flowers bloom and then they shrivel
They can be tall and weak
They can be strong and little
They come in seasons for good reason
They're not always so beautiful
The frost can come so soon
And they begin to dull

So just remember
Not to lose all hope
When petals fall
Don't try to catch them
It doesn't mean your love is broke

Just remember
That your friends are well
They each woke up this morning
And have stories to tell

And know if you were there
It wouldn't be a whole lot better
Because you can't brave every storm
And you can't change the weather

But you can press these stems and petals
To remember when they fell
Every moment that they gave you
Is a memory now

And you can collect every picture
That you snapped inside your head
You can write stories of adventures
That you had before you left

And you can look to the future
Because you'll see them again
There's so much more that waits in store
Before we reach the end

So don't be afraid to plant a seed
And look to see where it might want to reach
Cause every flower needs a home
It needs sun and water just to start to grow

Every day it inches taller you will know
That it is beautiful and fragile on its own
But with you it stands a chance to brave the cold
Of every winter of its life that it may know
