Original State

Original State

A Poem by Katie Kistler
"

For you, whoever you are

"
Phases
I am my phases
Is that all I'm bound to be?
Am I bound to fall in love like that
And never helped back onto my feet?
Phases are just stages
Of expected intimacy
With the thing you want
For a period of time
But that's not what you are to me

You're not a pimple on my face
That will just hurt and fade away
More like a scar on my cheek
That I will see most every day
Just like the one by my lips
From a f*****g vicious cat
Just like the color of my hair
You see it used to be real green
Then it was pink, then purple and blue
And then purple again
Of course there were some inbetweens that didn't fit or last too long
But I come back to my original state before too long
And that's you
Darling, that's you
You are my original state

These faces
Look at these phases
Man that's all they'll ever be
Four faces that tried to trip me up
But I was still on my two feet
Faces will be phases
Of people that you wanted to see
But they're blocking the view
Of the bigger picture
Which is simply you and me

My original state
My funky poetry
Which really isn't poetry at all
I write songs
I am a songwriter
But I can't play for s**t or even sing at all
But I'll write for you
Cause that's what lovers do
And you will make my eyes sing stupid, sappy songs
I'll whisper that I'm sorry
For distractions and for time
Cause every day is just another less
You'll whisper that it's funny
As you throw me one more line
That I was always yours and we can just forget the rest
Cause you are my original state
You are my original state
You are my original state
You are my original state

Clavicle
Your clavicle
I trace it with my fingertips
This graphite pencil doesn't do it any justice
But it's still yours in every sense
And I smile at your eyes
Cause now I've sort of made them mine
There is a touch of me in you
Maybe I'll spill my coffee just to get the color right
And you will ask me if I feel like
Feel like kissing
Man I wish that we were always kissing
In our original state
Our lips are locked
You hands are wrapped around my neck
And my palms are on your cheeks
Cause I want this to be sweet
And it will be, but I don't know that yet
I won't know you're my original state
Until I see you in the morning
With the sun in your face
And think I want to see this every day
Because you are my original state
You are my original state
Yeah, you are my original state
My original state

This brought back so many memories and at the same time made me realize how happy with where I am now. Brilliantly written and flowed very smoothly. Honestly, there were spots where I caught myself almost singing while reading. Their were a couple spelling errors, but I didn't notice them until the third time i read through it. Great poem!
