A Poem by Katie Kistler

How can I draw you

and the stars in your name?

How can I sketch out

the oceans in your gaze?

How does your hair

fall like autumn leaves?

What makes you look

like I could find you in the trees?

Your olive-toned skin

always speckled with dirt

Your stomach always showing

from underneath your shirt

Your lopsided smile

with your cute, crooked teeth

The piercing in your lip

when you smile at me

And the cotton in your hair

from all that lying in the grass

The way you'll start a sentence

and then end it with a dash

The way you curl into a ball

when you're lying next to me

And hold your fingers to your mouth

as you're frowning in your sleep

The collars torn off all your shirts

your clavicle beneath

The dresses that you wear sometimes

I'll never get to see

Your lipstick always cherry red

applied so perfectly

The way you sing along to songs

and sing along with me

The way you read, the way you write

the way you say my name

The way you play with everyone

cause everything's a game
