Apologies and Warnings

Apologies and Warnings

A Poem by Kat Mandu

I didn't mean to threaten you-
The words just came out wrong.
This city reeks of rancid love,
Break from this jealous throng.
Break free before you're torn apart,
Left with a bleeding heart.
At least there's blood there,
Darling,
My rib-cage is empty,
Wasted and starving.
Let's talk of him and less of me.
His whispers twist your soul,
You think he sets you free.
Darkness lies in every corner,
He spills blood, it stains the bed
Sniffing at the smell of hell,
And heaven's tangy scent.
At least the blood's not yours,
Darling.
You don't see or feel the pain,
However loud I scream your name.
The sun and moon medizes,
The twilight sky burns red.
Shadows die,
The drink runs dry,
The flames of fear are fed.
Avoid the dark, beware the night,
Darling,
Hear me shout.
Remain and have your heart destroyed,
And have your soul torn out.
Back to me, my love in vain,
Darling.
Silver rings fall down the drain,
Over and over,
This town is the same.
All of us burning as the record plays
Let the distorted lyrics kill us hard.
Then make us live again.
Why is it that you can't you see?
His hated, empty apathy.
Mine is just as bad,
That's true.
Yet it's the best I can give,
And what I give to you.
Darling,
I heard you say,
You'd wait for me until your dying day.

I hear you speak but can't believe,
I wear my torn heart on my patched-up sleeve
Tell me,
Darling,
Was it a lie,
Another ploy?
Or are you with me,
Waiting still?
Until I grow up and learn to kill.

Vanquish enemies and yell
This town destroyed me yet I am well.
Well enough for you,
Darling,
Enough to hold the knife.
You and he made this monster,
It's time to take his life.
Hand me the blade and close your eyes
I can't let you see this;
The way he screams and dies.

Now he is gone,
And you remain,
Darling,
Please recite my name.
Tell me I'm the one you love,
The one you'll never hate.
You pause and then I know I'm late.
You strike me down,
I can't see,
Cursing, detesting, destiny.

I didn't mean to threaten you-
The words just came out wrong.
I whisper sorry through lips dry,
But the time for apologies has gone.
Darling,
Do not dwell on me,
The misguided fool you see.
Turn around, please don't look,
At the monster that is me.

We will play the monster. We will learn one day. The face of the monster must be lost or we shall die alone.

I walked alone and pissed off for 10 years after the suicide of two brothers. Woman with some children make me learn. Anger and the face of monster was fake. A powerful poem. Made me think this morning. Thank you for sharing the amazing poetry.

"I didn't mean to threaten you-
The words just came out wrong."
I could write about these two lines alone.
I love the directness and the recklessness in the portrayal of your monster, it makes me think of a manic depressive cycle. Very well worded.
