Lonely Child

Lonely Child

A Poem by Kat Collins

Lonely child

Swinging under a willow tree

Her shadow dances

Wild and free

Mocking her chains and ropes tied tight

She watches it spin and twist in the wind

Dappled by sunlight

Father is waiting

Tapping adjusting scowl

Watching the mouse

Dragging her feet slow

Teddy's all dusty crumbling

An eye is missing and an ear chewed

Rubbed raw by passionate love of a child

Carefree and pure

She shuffles close

Cowering in the overpowering shadow

So much larger than she

Teddy pulls close

Offering simple solace to a trembling heart

Father gazes down at the little one

His eyes soften so sweet

Tilting a dimpled chin to the sun

Caressing her downy cheek

He searches her eyes

Lost in their shadowed blueness

Tender smiles

Her heart flutters free

Love pure unconditional

Hand in hand

Facing the illuminating sunset

Shadows large and small

Side by side

Teddy drags in the dusty silt

Waiting for the moment he's needed again.
