UnrequitedA Poem by Karissa A. KellyI wrote this some time ago after a devastating heartbreak. I came across it recently and found that despite my pain I channeled it into creativity. (I'm well over this now though, don't worry.)
Many an evening mine
Spent writhing in the linens and the mind The sheet's soft scratch across my skin Much like the physical and mental space Of which was occupied By affection- affliction turned Under a false impression That such an idea proposed Would not be spurned Affection exposed And so brought friction A pure vision burned. The biting cold of yesteryear Frozen tear Once thawed would water The roots that as Air turned hotter Clawed up out of the soil Pain and toil returned. Once more beguiled All within me riled Winter's call brought leaves to fall And I with them. Once again A promise made and broken Events of past repeated Taken- a mere token With words so softly spoken Guards and walls defeated Will of protest depleted. Fruitless Empty handed save The blade driven into entrails mine Deep impale To this day I fail To make straight this tangled twine. Ruthless Fragment of hope dangled Before wanting eyes From which far too many tears were cried Yellow flowers dried Tied and hung To brighten up the room That would soon resemble A personal temple Made dark and bleak with doom As luck would have, old wounds resume To bloom And bleed The want, the need Expelled, forbade Forced away Wilted petals and affliction not returned Dusting in the dirt Where it ought to be Rained and sunburned on Left to decay Where it ought to stay.
