Currents

Currents

A Poem by Kapiolani Park

I went to take her hand
At first it seemed warm and inviting
But as hers clasped mine, it was as if I grabbed vice grips
I couldn't let go if I wanted to
But I didn't want to
A current poured out of me and down the length of her forearm,
Then our gaze met
There was nowhere else for mine to go
It was like looking down an endless hallway through binoculars turned the opposite way
All else was white noise
Her noise like a rushing water
Or was it the noise of the current barreling through my body into her?
Did it all land in a reservoir swirling deep inside her?
Or did it pass through her back into a far away space from where it came?
That noise led me down the tunnels of her pupils
That was where time came unhinged
Her and I suspended in a rift in eternity
For only a moment
I let go just before forfeiting something I felt like I shouldn't lose
What was it?
