Old Friends, New EnemiesA Poem by EstelleEven the bonds of friendship Tend to wear away When faced with time And the strife of lifeWhen we were young We thought we would be Inseparable Best Friends For Life One soul entwined together Lasting through time But as the distance grows between us An unbridgeable gap And we become unable to Talk Without feeling awkward and Making up lies Rushing past each other I wonder if we were truly friends at all We pretend that we don't notice But as we grow older And the gap grows larger Fleeting glances in the hall Turn into harsh glares As we become enemies Small smiles and empty promises Turn into Sneers and barely concealed threats Pressured by a peers, frightened by our differences The friendship we had is gone And replaced with rivalry, hate, and jealously But alone, just the two of us Before the insults fly and wound us Past recognition We wonder if the other too, regrets That we are getting farther apart We wonder if they too, Wish we could mend our broken Friendship But the wish becomes buried under The insults we send to each other And we realize, with startling clarity That nothing lasts forever © 2014 Estelle |
