Everything Changes

Everything Changes

A Chapter by Alexis Cather
"

Another boring day at South Umberton for Angelina. But today will change her life forever without her even knowing it.

"

Light pierced Angelina’s eyes making her wake up. She rubbed her eyes and saw her mother opening her blinds. Her mother. The one she tried to escape from in her dreams, her sleep.

“Time for school Angelina,” her mother said not looking at her.

Angelina sighed. School. The other miserable thing in her life, well when Angelina really thought about it, everything in her life was miserable.

*

Angelina entered the school. Of course Chester was right there at the front door. She let out an annoyed sighed. She really didn’t want to deal with him today. Maybe she could sneak away before he saw her. Maybe she could quickly get to her first class without him noticing.

“Mute!” shouted the voice Angelina didn’t want to hear. She knew it was too late to get away. Chester was already rushing over to her.

“Good morning Mute,” he said with a big grin.

Angelina said nothing. She really didn’t want to be anywhere near Chester, he was beyond annoying.

“Ah same old mute. Well off we go to class. You seem like the type who gets to class super early,” Chester said leading Angelina through the crowd.

She clenched her fists. How could Chester know what she was like? She’d just met him yesterday. Angelina decided to do nothing and followed him.

This continued all day. “Hey Mute! How was class?” and “Mute, did you say anything?” But now it was the last class of the day and five minutes from the bell ringing. Unfortunately Chester sat next to Angelina and kept chattering like a canary that just wouldn’t shut up.

            Three more minutes.

Angelina got her stuff together and zoned out. She was ready to go home and to her room, to her own world. No worries. No mother or brother, and especially no annoying Chester.

She came back into the real world just as Chester was loudly explaining the “awesome” skateboard trick he had done the other day. Suddenly the bell rang and everyone charged out of the classroom.

Angelina was one of the first, trying to get away from Chester, but then the dreadful voice came.

            “Mute! Hey Mute! Wait up!”

Angelina quickened her pace, but it wasn’t enough, Chester was now next to her with his stupid big grin.

“You know, if I didn’t know any better, I’d think you were trying to avoid me,” Chester said.

No, really? Angelina thought sarcastically. She almost made it to the front door, when someone tapped her on the shoulder. She thought it was Chester, but looked to see he was already turned around. Angelina turned to see a man about her height, with a plump figure and a very furry mustache on his upper lip.

“Excuse me? Are you Angelina Clark?” the small man asked.

            Angelina nodded.

“Oh good. I’m Robert Puffer, Mr. Puffer to you. I’m the school guidance counselor,” he said. “Would you mind if I had a word with you in my office?”

Angelina sighed and shook her head. Only a few people lingered in the entrance foyer. She caught Chester inching away out of the corner of her eye.

“Ah Mr. Fisher. Why don’t you join us?” Mr. Puffer asked.

Chester mumbled something under his breath, but Angelina couldn’t make it out. They both followed the plump, Mr. Puffer into a windowed office. They passed a lady with a pointed nose, big lips, and square glasses placed on the very tip of her nose. She looked like the guidance office secretary.

Mr. Puffer waved to the woman as he led Angelina and Chester into a small rectangular office. They sat in the two chairs in front of the desk as Mr. Puffer took his seat behind his desk.

“So Angelina, I’ve been hearing from your teachers that you don’t talk much, and it’s been worrying them,” Mr. Puffer said.

Angelina said nothing. She never figured teachers would worry about her. They never did at her old school.

“Is there any problems at home or do you have problems with making new friends?” Mr. Puffer asked glancing at Chester who was messing around with the small knick-knacks on his desk.

Angelina sat perfectly silent. She didn’t have to talk about anything with this weird counselor.

“Please Angelina talk to me. I can be a friend to you,” Mr. Puffer said.

Chester let out a snicker.

Mr. Puffer shot an angry look at him. He looked ready to yell at Chester when suddenly the phone rang. Mr. Puffer answered it. During the phone call there were many “yeses” and “mhms”. Finally after what felt like forever he hung up the phone.

“Terribly sorry, I need to be somewhere right now. Do you mind waiting till I come back?” Mr. Puffer asked.
Angelina shook her head, while Chester let out an annoyed grunt. Angelina looked at him, then back at Mr. Puffer.

The school counselor smiled and got up and left the room, leaving Angelina alone with Chester.

“Well I’m leaving,” Chester said standing up.

Angelina gave him a questioning look.

“Bet you he’s going to get a donut or something. I have no reason to be here, so I’m going home,” Chester explained.

Without another word, Chester turned around and left.

Angelina turned and looked out the window. She finally got what she wanted, to be alone, sweet relief from everyone in the world. At least till Mr. Whatever comes back. Suddenly the butterflies dropped to the ground outside. Angelina jumped up and poked her head out the window and couldn’t believe her eyes. Everything was dead. The trees had turned gray and the grass tan like in the winter time. But soon it shriveled away leaving only dirt.

Angelina shivered. She didn’t understand. What was happening? Then suddenly without any warning a green light hit her. It covered the room and it felt as if Angelina had been hit by an ocean wave. She fell to the floor and everything went black.
