New Town, New FacesA Chapter by Alexis CatherAngelina has just moved to Clamberton and hates it! Not only that, but she gets stuck with the mayor of stupidity Chester Fisher, to escort her around school that day.As the sun rises behind the dark muggy clouds in little Clamberton, Indiana an evil menacing feeling fills the air. At least that was how Angelina Clark felt. Having just moved from the hustle and bustle of Indianapolis, to the pace to pace small town of Clamberton, really left a toll on the sixteen year old. Not only would she have to adapt to a new town and school, she would have to make all new friends. Making friends was something Angelina was never good at. She only had one friend ever in her life in Indianapolis, and now she was four hours away. Angelina slowly made her way to her new high school, South Umberton High, a brand new reality for Angelina. She wished it was just a dream. Angelina closed her eyes and memories of Indianapolis flooded back to her, the streets, the buildings, the sounds, and the people. She wished that when she opened her eyes, everything would come back, that she could be back in her home. Indianapolis. But of course, Angelina opened her eyes, and there was stupid, dull, lifeless Clamberton. She sighed and continued on. Step after step, Angelina got closer to her future, which would soon go black. * Angelina took a long look at the old brick building. Her school back in Indianapolis she went to was made in the recent decade. This school building on the other hand looked like it had fifty years minimum on it, with its chipping bricks, cracked windows, and chipping paint on the wooden front doors. “You must be new.” Angelina turned around and saw a boy with long “skater like” blonde hair. She didn’t say anything. Angelina was too stunned to speak. No boy had ever talked to her, not even in Indianapolis. Then again Angelina, in her opinion, didn’t think she was pretty enough for guys to talk to her. “Don’t talk much huh. Well I’m Chester Fisher, coolest kid at South Umberton High,” the boy said making a stupid little pose. Ha I bet, Angelina thought sarcastically. She looked back at the old school building. What if they had an earthquake? Would the old brick chipping building be able to stay up? Angelina hoped Chester had gone away. She really didn’t want to talk to anyone, especially a conceited skater boy. She turned and saw Chester was still there. Crap, she thought. “So do you have a name or should I call you Mute?” Chester asked. He had a huge grin on his face, bigger than Angelina had ever seen. He stood there perfectly patient waiting for her to answer. Right as Angelina was about to answer, a rather handsome senior boy came up to her and Chester. “Ah you must be Angelina Clark, the new girl from Indianapolis. I’m David Shouter, your student body president. It’s very nice to meet you. I know you’ll love it here at South Umberton High School,” he said. David held out his hand. Angelina shook it and said, “thank you,” very softly. He looked at her with his devastatingly beautiful blue eyes. Angelina tried to hide her face in her long dark hair, but her bright green eyes still shone through. David smiled at her and Angelina’s cheeks got very warm and red. “Quiet one I see. Well no worries you’ll soon find someone you will relate to,” David commented. Chester grunted. “So David, who’s going to show Mute around?” Mute? Really? Angelina thought. She didn’t think he was being serious about the “mute thing.” “Well now that you mention it, Angelina will need an escort around school for today and tomorrow,” David said. “And since you mentioned it, I think you should escort her.” Angelina stopped and looked at David. Alright you’re not so cute anymore, she thought getting a little aggravated. Chester didn’t look too thrilled about it either though. “Me! Why?!” Chester asked in a shocked tone. “Because you thought of the brilliant idea and I believe you and Angelina should get to know each other. Who knows, maybe you’ll find something you two have in common,” David said turning to leave, but before he did, he winked at Angelina making her blush again. All is forgiven, she thought lovingly, standing in what looked like a daze. “But David! I’m not a charity worker! I didn’t volunteer for this! God I hate you!” Chester yelled. Angelina suddenly felt rage for Chester. He was being so rude right now. Why was it so awful to show her around? She would’ve had this done weeks ago if it weren’t for her grandparents dying. Who both, oddly enough, died on the same day. No one questioned it though. Chester sighed. “Well Mute let’s-“ “My name is Angelina,” Angelina interrupted rudely. She saw Chester standing there with a surprised look on his face as if he thought she couldn’t speak. He said nothing. Having more courage, Angelina spoke again. “Yes I can speak Chester, and I would prefer you call me Angelina instead of Mute,” she said sternly. “And another thing, I don’t like this arrangement anymore than you do, but in respect for David I will deal with it and you will too.” Chester still said nothing, just stared at her. But not like she was crazy. Why was he staring at her like that? “Demanding aren’t you,” he finally said in a cocky tone. He turned around and led Angelina into the old building. Angelina looked around the school. It actually didn’t look so old on the inside. It looked as if it had recently been renovated. Chester led her through the winding hallways. Angelina got confused instantly. Then Chester stopped. There was screaming down the hallway, then Chester’s arm came and slammed into Angelina’s stomach. She took a step back from the impact and hit the whole backside of the body against the lockers. Just as fast as Chester had shoved her out of the way, a Latino kid came by on his skateboard being chased by teachers. Angelina realized if Chester hadn’t of gotten her out of the way, she would have been ran over. “Stupid Tony, I can’t believe I got to deal with him for two more years,” Chester grumbled. Angelina looked at Chester with a “who is that boy” look. She was very good at making her facial expressions into what she was thinking, and apparently Chester knew how to read expressions. “That kid is Tony Roverra, he’s my neighbor and the biggest pain in the neck ever,” Chester explained. Angelina blinked as Chester moved his arm. They began to move on, but then Chester stopped again and turned around. “Oh maybe we should look at your schedule,” he said with an embarrassed grin. Angelina nodded and dug around in her blue shoulder bag, got her schedule out, and handed it to Chester. “Wow you have a lot of sophomore classes,” he said with a huge grin. Oh I wonder why? Angelina thought with an irritated eye roll. She had barely made it past freshman year. Mostly because of Angelina’s counseling and the fact she never cared about her grades. “I’m a junior, so I took all this last year,” Chester said. Wow great job, Angelina thought sarcastically. How stupid did he think she was? “Yeah well let’s get going Mu- I mean Angelina,” Chester said turning around and leading her to her first class. Angelina followed amused at how Chester finally said her real name. * Angelina sat in her room which was only filled with a bed, a wooden oak side table, and a closet full of clothes at the moment. She lay on her bed staring at the white ceiling, praying something could take her home to Indianapolis. Her first day at South Umberton hadn’t been that extraordinary, being paired with the master of stupidity, Chester Fisher, to show her around the school. He still called her Mute every once in a while, but Angelina learned to just get over it. Then there was her teachers, old and worn out and yelled if the tiniest noise was made. Well except for her English teacher who was fairly young and didn’t mind if you talked every once in a while. Not that Angelina would talk anyway. Probably the only good thing about the day was David Shouter. He was so kind and caring and the way his eyes sparkled made Angelina want to faint, but why would he want to date someone like her. Quiet, self secured, and just all around everything David wasn’t. Angelina sighed, she would never fit in. Clamberton isn’t her home. Indianapolis is, or was. “Angelina! Dinner is ready!” a voice shouted from downstairs. Angelina knew it was her mother, but she wasn’t hungry. She flipped over onto her stomach and buried her face in her pillow, only to have someone kick open her door. Angelina shot up to see it was her little brother Brian, the biggest annoyance of her life. He always carried around fake guns and wore his plastic two dollar cowboy hat, and played cowboy. “Bang! Bang! Now you’re dead!” Brain’s high pitched voice rang out. “Get out of here you little slug!” Angelina yelled. She hated Brian so much and wished he’d leave her alone. “But you’re dead! You can’t talk!” Brian whined crossing his arms over his chest, looking like he was getting ready to throw a tantrum. “I said get out Brian!” Angelina shouted louder. Still Brian didn’t move. His arms were still crossed and he still had that tantrum look on his face. Angelina finally couldn’t take it anymore. She got up shoved her brother to the ground, out of her doorway and slammed the door shut. She heard crying, but it soon got fainter. Then her mother’s voice cried out. “Angelina Rose Clark! Get down here right now!” Angelina sighed. Stupid Brian, she thought with a scowl on her face. Angelina made her way down the steps. Her mother stood there in the kitchen, arms crossed and tapping her foot. Brian clung to her side wrapping himself around her leg. Why did you push your brother down?” Angelina’s mother asked sternly. “He was-“ “No Angelina! I don’t want to hear your excuses! Now get your dinner and go to your room. You’re grounded!” Angelina sighed. She grabbed her plate and hurried up the steps to her room. She sat on her bed and stared at the blank, white wall. This was normal in her family, the whining and crying from her brother, and the constant bickering of Angelina and her mother. And her mother and brother always win. Angelina wished she could live with her father, but he was in jail after trying to kill her mother, that ended in divorce. Angelina put her food on her side table and flopped onto her pillow. She wished she could just escape her family, her life and go somewhere else. Darkness soon engulfed Angelina as she fell into a deep sleep. Life was perfect here, no brother, no mother, just Angelina. Perfect. © 2011 Alexis CatherFeatured Review
