What's behind that smile?

What's behind that smile?

A Poem by KamalTrivedi

We see these pretty faces
everywhere we go.
But what's behind these walls put up
that we do not know?

We will never know the stories
of these faces that we pass.
Just what they will show us,
something that may not last.

As we speak and go about,
our very moving day,
these smiles will slowly change and morph
and unhurriedly go away.

Will they stay upon the ones
who genuinely feel a glee?
Or will they sneak so far away
revealing the mystery?

What's behind that pretty smile?
Will you let it show?
All these faces that we pass...
will we ever truly know?

i really liked this. i work in a church, so this is an idea i often entertain...what is really behind the facade. this was well written and entertaining to read.

A very concise, well structured poem with a sensible, fluid rhyme scheme and a clear message. Its the message and the idea of this poem that I really like - the idea of passing people and not knowing what's behind their expressions. Sometimes even knowing someone for years doesn't give you the ability to read them - let alone trying to read someone you see for a split second. Nice work, I enjoyed reading it :)
