The Red StringA Poem by Kala BenfieldThere's an empty glass of cheap champagne on the left side of town. Just before the wind breaks, she walks in where everyone stares as she sits down. There's a red string tied to her hand, so lovely, so lonely. Reminds her who gave her the silver wedding band. The smoke that filters the room, left her lungs with a silent boom. In place on the left side of town, She let him go, where the four winds blew him away. With the red string tied, it shattered like her glass of empty champagne. Never and always alone. But, she never thought she would forget his name. The no name man she forgot she loved. It was a reminder of the love that's away. She sits alone, but never alone With a ring she forgot she owned. A pen in her hand with the red string she tied again, she writes words from worlds she has left at home. Piling the paper. Shes forgotten what to say. Now, shes always and never alone. Red sting, where did you go? You're leaving her be? With neglect, sorrow, everyone can see? She walks with whispers as tears break the ground. Shes the one standing out on the left side of town and her red string she twirls around. The no name wedding band and the red string on her hand, Remember. Remember.
