Room 324

A Poem by Kaitlyn Raiford

I close my eyes,
and breathe in the scent of rain and lilies.
Just moments ago you were here,
and I can't bring myself to leave.

I grasp in my hand the flowers you gave me.
My favorite..
How did you know?

The clear wrapping softly crumbles in my hands.
Its surface is cool and light against my fingers.
Why did you leave?
I don't understand.

I open my eyes and see only the empty night crying,
your scent lingers there.
Where did you go?
Why did you leave?

I turn back to walk into the main building of the hotel.
The more steps I take the more I feel my world fall apart.
The closer I get to room 324,
I feel the heaviness of pain swell in my heart.

It was there that I discovered a love lost.
It is here that I lose you now.
But you will be here in the morning.
Even though I know it I don't know how.

The elevator conceals me in its bright metal doors,
Shaking up until it opens in front of my room.
Room 324, where I feel deep regret.
But where I am reassured by the loving memories of you.
