Never

Never

A Poem by Kaitlyn Raiford

I shall never know
If your eyes are blue or brown.
I will never see
If your face is thin or round.

Nor could I imagine
The color of your hair.
So many questions-
It all seems so unfair.

I will never know
If you'd be a little girl or boy.
I will never get to see
Your favorite food or toy.

I could never guess
What your first word could have been.
I will never get to meet
Your very first forever-friend.

I will never get to see
the loss of your favorite thing.
I also, will never know,
What that favorite thing could be,

Never will I hear
You cry during the night-
Or feel relieved when
You finally close your eyes.

None of these things
Were ever meant to be...
Because, my little one-
You left a little early.

But I will always remember
How it felt to wake at night.
How my dreams reflected my excitement-
And never, ever fright.

I will always have
The stretch marks on my skin.
Just like I will always know
How it felt to have you within.

Never shall I forget
How happy it felt to have you.
Even if your father and I....
Will never get to meet you.

I only hope you know
That we've always only loved you.
