Equal to Man

Equal to Man

A Poem by Kaitlyn Raiford

I will be nothing more than a beauty-

But I especially will be nothing less.

Hiding behind the artificial simplicity

I am truly and secretly complex.

It is expected by adults that I am proper-

By my peers that I am perfect.

All of the changes that I make to please them...

Are any of them worth it?

If my eyes are not bright

Or if my hair is not the length...

Well there are always new ways

To make sure that I fix these things.

If I give you my opinion,

Then I suddenly become demanding.

And if I want to love,

Well then it's suddenly deemed to be smothering.

Can I not be anything great?

Can I not be perfect the way I am?

Must every aspect of me be up for debate

In order for me to be equal to man?
