Two Rocks and a StormA Poem by Kaitlyn RaifordTwo rocks, quite the similar mold, are thrown into the shallow. For days the sun shines through the water, and provide it with just a glimmer. But the cold was creeping in, and soon they knew that darkness would swallow. So parting ways they made a decision that they wouldn't wait for winter.
The first laid in the sand and thought of how to skip back up to the shore. He watched the current with horror, and did not pay it any mind. He thought that if he could climb back up, then he would get there for sure. So he began his way back, deciding that the current was a waste of time.
But the second had a sense of danger, he knew that everything had a reason. He figured that he was no longer to be on the soft sand that he once was. Without a second glance he caught the current, fleeing from the bitter season- He realized that in the end it would be worth it, no matter if it was long.
Two rocks, quite of different mind, are now on two separate sides. For days one lays, as the other goes off, but each as determined and set. One rock plays scenarios over and over, still giving the current no mind. But the second, hopeful and willed, is brought up in a fisherman's net.
As the second rock, now smoothed with hardship from the current is raised In a net filled with fish and sea, he finds, on the other side, a small family of three. Two small children with saddened faces, and a withered man who seemed quite aged- Had thrown the net in hopes for dinner, for they, too, were at the mercy of the sea.
The man sat the net down, looking through his findings with glee, As the small children gladly took the rock from its place amongst the fish. The rock was happy that he was in the warmth of love, and a friend he was deemed- He knew that to meet this family was more than he could have wished.
So throughout the winter he kept the family company, as they did for him- And once the cold and storm had passed they all set back on the way home. When they reached their destination they realized their home was standing still- But there, just barely spotted beneath the water, was a rock all alone.
The children picked it up, but without second glanced skipped it in the deep. That rock, all alone, was now stuck in the darkness of fear. But the one that dared to make the best, was snuggled warmly in a child's hand As the other only hoped he could find his way back into the shallow. © 2013 Kaitlyn Raiford |
