Had Gone

3-1-11

“Don’t just sit there!”

He shouts.

“She has fallen, can’t you see?”

He screams.

 

No one sees a thing.

“It’s all in your mind!”

“Get off the sidewalk and just go home!”

Others yell obnoxiously loud.

 

“No, I can’t just leave her laying her like this!

Why won’t you fools do something to help?

She can’t die out here! I won’t let that happen to her!

Someone must have pushed her, right off the edge of that building!”

 

His heart filled with sorrow

But his mind filled with rage.

 

“She is an innocent girl! She can’t be any older than 25!

Please just call for some help! Don’t act like her life is worthless!

She isn’t a piece of gum that’s stuck to your shoe!”

 

He begins to cry

Silently at first

Then losing control of his breath

His weeping grows louder.

 

He closes his eyes

Squeezing them tight

Gasping to catch a breath

 

Then when he opens his eyes

She isn’t there

The girl had gone.

Or maybe

She was never there.

I like this poem as it is, but I have to agree with Jim. That line did give it away a bit too early..

This is sad and heart-wrenching and has just a slight undertone of creepy. You write about anguish really well. If I could make one suggestion, I think it would have been better if you hadn't given it away so early with this line...“It’s all in your mind!” I think it would have made a much better poem if we just found out in the last stanza. Maybe have them shouting something different that's equally as abusive but doesn't give it away? Even so, it's an excellent poem. Nicely done!
