Bipolar

Bipolar

A Poem by Kailani

You speak like sweet caramel and creamy chocolate
Setting eager hopes and expectations
Pretty thoughts and existential beauty
The magic of the very molecules we breathe bursts through the excitement you emanate for the pure perfection of this world
You transform me into a grounded redwood supported by thick, unbreakable roots
Yet simultaneously the carefree breeze flowing softly through its leaves

For this I am lucky
Until the breeze grows into a hurricane I am lucky
The calm before the storm sets a tone that can never be held
In a symphony too perfect to be real
Words like knives cursed into the delicately superlative air
Broken promises
Lost time
Missed calls
And a bitter aftertaste left perpetually on my tongue
A double-edged sword
A double-sided face
The hesitant realization that Mount Everest and the Mariana Trench have one thing in common
They're both extremes
On the top I await the depths
Miles underwater I pray for air
Disappointment slowly eases into expectation

This offering describes how romance can be like bipolar illness. The speaker is transported to the heights when the relationship is going well, but cast to the depths when it goes sour. The language describes both of these states well. Liked very much the symbolism of Mt. Everest and the Marianas Trench. Very fitting.
