Hidden by the MistA Poem by Kailani
A thick veil of mist obscures the small town of Crescent Bay Cove, causing you to wonder where the sand ends and the whispering waters of the sea begin.
The fine, sugary-white sand, often turned a golden hue by the warm sunlight, is now lost in this sea of mist. The ocean's gentle whooshes and faint laughing burble are muted and distant sounding in the thick veil of wetness. In the gardens, the deep red poppies and brilliant purple-blue irises are bent under the weight of huge droplets of water, and the sunflowers, daisies and narcissus' colors are dulled and less vibrant in these hours just before dawn. Spiderwebs, blades of grass and bushes are weighted down by huge, heavy dew drops of water that refused to fall. Out of the depths of pale, white mist emerges a young girl. Her long, deep red hair cascades gently past her shoulders and frames her pale, heart shaped face. Beneath a wide brimmed, faded straw sun hat adorned with a bright blue ribbon and a sprig of lavender, a pair of large, sparkling green eyes brimming full of warmth and merriment are hidden. A small, ski slope nose turned slightly pinkish in colour from many days in the sun is set above a large, red mouth with lips curved into an everlasting smile. A sprinkle of freckles dusted her nose and cheekbones and long, dark lashes frame her large eyes. Upon further examining the girl, you notice that she wears a brightly coloured blue dress and a fine pair of sand-shoes. She carries a basket and walks merrily, her slim frame seeming to burst with life and energy. On the horizon, a tint of warm rosy pink edges the sky, quickly becoming a burst of vibrant color, sending it's golden rays piercing through the mist. The mist seems to evaporate immediately, leaving behind a orange, pink, and red sky which slowly turns a vibrant shade of sapphire as the warm, copper sun rises higher into the sky. The only breath of life is the girl, who is caught in the stillness of the moment, her face tuned upwards in brilliant rapture towards the clear sky. The trill of birdsong slices through the silence, breaking the girl from her thoughts. She sets off again at a brisk pace to the edge of the clear blue sea. Wading into it's turquoise and silver depths, she watches as clouds of sand puff from her footsteps and takes joy in the warm sunlight that filters down. Taking no heed of her dress, she tosses her shoes up onto the sand with her hat and basket, and simply let's the sea carry her away. As she floats, she breathes in the fresh, salty air and dreams of simply letting the sea take her far away, to far away lands and the edges of the earth. She wouldn't mind this, being away from everything else suits her just fine. She prefers to be alone and is quite content never to have to speak to another person again. Finally, she begins to hear the faint sounds of the village stirring, and, with a sigh of resignation, she stands, the water reaching her chin, and wades back to shore. Gathering her things, she leaves her hat and shoes off, dangling them from her fingertips, and skipping blissfully back the way she came. The villagers watch curiously from the large, bay windows of their bungalows as the strange, silent girl passes through, ever wondering. © 2010 KailaniAuthor's Note
