In The Middle of a Nightmare

In The Middle of a Nightmare

A Poem by Kae Martyndale
"

Another favourite from high school

"

A lady finds herself shovelling snow from her lawn onto the cleared driveway
As she stands there in her night gown and her slippers,
No longer do the big things in life matter
No longer does she care that the rent hasn't been paid in six months,
Or that her son has disowned her and her daughter is pregnant
To her only the little things matter

"He left his cigarette burning in the ashtray again"
She muttered as she shovelled snow onto the driveway
"He took the last piece of bread"
And two more clumps of snow hit the ground
"He left the toilet seat up again"
She muttered as the final chunk of snow hit the driveway

The driveway was covered with snow
And she was satisfied with what she had done
But only for today
Will she ever go back? We do not know.
For she is still there, shovelling snow
In her night gown and her slippers
Waiting for her husband to come home.

Very nice, I liked the lyricism and use of language. Especially since you were in high school when you wrote it.
