we must keep living

we must keep living

A Poem by KWP

memories will fade

replaced with bright shiny and new

still we must keep living

there was a time when

nothing else mattered

a time when life seemed a little easier

each breath hope filled

conversations layered in joy,

plans for the future were just that - plans

merriment and shared times

adventure and love

taking on the invincible

we could do it all

we would have it all

then, we looked the other way

oooh - a new kind of sparkle

delivered with excitement anew

new plans for the future were made

breath became laborious

conversations waned

heart sank into dark suffocation

still we must keep living

I believe that there are certain "core memories" that are so powerful that they will never really fade. The stronger the emotional impact - positive or negative - the longer-lasting the memory. That's why the term "scars" is an apt one for such psychological features.
The film, "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" deals with this issue: the desire and inability to forget.
It is also said that the pain lasts until the lesson is learned. Then, perhaps, memories can finally fade.

I'm rambling on...

The poem made me think a lot...

You posted these words on my birthday! Had I not been busy opening cards and sipping too much coffee, I'd have read the above and learned how to .. accept that all the wonderful things life brings comes and goes like tidal movements, leaving their memories on shifting sands, That said, dear you of words memorable, often wave a bright, defiant flag - gee-ing up sinking hopes and miserable faces. So, better late than never, am off away to obey your finely written thoughts and holding onto them.. as should. Take care, keep safe, as ever always, dear E!" '

Good memories are a blessing. It's the bad ones we try to forget. We can, after all, only live for the day.
Nicely penned.

This sounds remorseful but aren't new plans also exciting? It is the living, breathing life that is not preordained. I do like this poem as it is a reminder to seize what we want

There is no going back. When things don't go to plan, we still have to work our way through the pain before we come out the other side. That's life, a journey which has its ups and its downs. Life has always been a bit of a roller-coaster, well for me it has. We have to make the most of it.

Hello, KWP! :)
This was an interesting read. It brought to mind the exuberance of youth, then crushed it. Haha
Our choices shape our lives, and as long as we live we can keep making choices. Thanks for sharing.

The best laid plans...I was never a planner, always realistic, new, know that nothing could be gained without grafting and hopefully the rewards of that would lead to more than I had and enough so that my daughter wouldn't have to struggle as I had, and to be fair it ain't worked out to bad.
Saying that, last week I cradled my 15 1/2 year old spaniel ( a 5th Xmas present for my now 20 year old daughter)as he was put to sleep, old age and illness, and on the same day one of our best friends called to say her breast cancer had returned and had spread to her liver.
Can be a rollercoaster ride this life we navigate.
Hope you are well m'dear

And back at ya :))
Sorry for your loss
I was born in 1950...I see me reflected in this piece. The hopes and dreams way back when, way back then...and what they became as the world changed so drastically.
Memories are good but sad that they are just memories now.
I long for the simpler times again...
But I know those will never come back....they are just photos in an album gathering drops of tears.

It's a hard realisation.
It sounds as though eyes are looking backward with some regret. Big plans were once made, but evidently they did not come to fruition. The last verse has a bitter sound to it, but the last line reflects determination. Which is certainly better than despair.
