Never There

Never There

A Poem by KWP

How can I ask for redemption

when I used you as bargaining chip to

level out the universe within me?

Selfish I am.

You have always been my world.

The first moment I saw you

darkness receded from the walls.

The walls collapsed.

Life became drenched in light.

The warmth you emitted

transformed me.

But, just like the flickering

Wick of a candle

Nothing lasts forever,

I burnt down to a cinder.

You, like you always do, continued to shine.

My darling I tried so hard.

Equilibrium never my forte.

Everyone began speaking

all at once.

Imagine that,

a party of personalities

each demanding something

in their own way,

from me, who had nothing left to give.

Not one of them listened to my pleas.

With all the conundrum

somebody left the door open,

darkness came laughing himself back in.

Like an unwanted visitor,

he stayed -

even when I begged though tears lacquered in

regret of what was to come,

he sat perched in his leather recliner

grinning the smile of a man who already knew

- he had won the day.

You are the first star in my every evening.

Forgive me darling,

you have the fortitude to keep going.

Promise you will share your light

with all that cross your path

yours is a gift of strength

and this world needs people

whose heart knows no limits,

crosses all boundaries without even a

glance in the backward direction.

Shine on my darling,

And don’t you ever look back,

for I was never there.

It's a lovely piece. For me, it reads a bit clunky in spots, but I still loved the message.

Clunky eh?
The second line should have "a" in front of, "bargaining chip to..."
i also believe it would read better if the last line in that stanza read, "How selfish I am". As opposed to yoda talk.
This is yet again a good poem with an amazing message behind it. I feel like you need to just read your stuff out loud to see if it reads awkwardly or not. :) good job!

Honest and strong words written.
Shine on my darling,
And don’t you ever look back,
for I was never there."
I like the honest tone of the words above. Thank you my friend for sharing the amazing poetry.

Though really quite beautiful, these fine words ooze both love and regret, in huge amounts..... Neville

Much love and regret in this poem KWP. You have loved and hurt and yet there is still so much love in these words. Tragic ending when you ask for forgiveness yet know it has ended. Poignant and touching to read.

The light of new love, passion burning, feel alive, starting to dim and then flicker out. The many dimensions of love.

sweet love for a while then it moves on,like a movie i guess,
but you never leave on a sour note, just at the peak of love

I so agree with Einstein Noodle, this is a tragic brutally, eloquently honest confessional poem. I am enraged that “darkness came laughing himself back in”. Imagery is both rapturous and haunting. You tell the one you love, and whom you have hurt to “shine on” without you, although he was your everything. Th3 last line brought tear. Excellent write.
